ADHD Medication Side Effects

There are four main medications used to treat ADHD. These come with different side effects and various risks, all of which affect each patient differently depending on his medical condition and drug interaction. Still, those considering ADHD medication can expect some basic side effects.

  1. Adderall Side Effects

    • Adderall is the most popular medication prescribed to treat adults with attention deficit disorders. Adderall has some of the mildest side effects of all the prescriptions, mostly showing up in the form of restlessness or anxiety, headache, insomnia and either constipation or diarrhea. Some patients suffer from changes in sex drive.

    Concerta Side Effects

    • Concerta causes loss of appetite, sleeplessness and stomach pain more commonly than any other side effect. In some patients, nausea and vomiting can happen. Concerta can also have some psychosomatic symptoms, such as tics, nervousness and serious problems such as psychosis and hallucinations.

    Ritalin Side Effects

    • Ritalin is most commonly prescribed to treat children, although adults can also use it. Nervousness and difficulty sleeping are the two most common side effects. Associated symptoms that can show up include palpitations, increased blood pressure, tachycardia and dizziness. Some patients experience allergic reactions such as skin rashes, exfoliative dermatitis and hives.

    Strattera Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of Strattera are related to stomach issues and include decreased appetite, upset stomach, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss. Allergic reactions are rare but can occur, and Strattera may cause mood swings.

    Safety Concerns

    • While most effects can be easily treated or controlled by adjusting the dosage or changing lifestyle habits, some can be potentially damaging and should be discussed with a doctor before starting the medication. These include effects on the developing brain (when prescribed to small children), psychiatric problems, heart-related issues and potential for abuse.
